  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. Does anybody know of an attachment for a reciprocating saw that allows a round file to be inserted? This would greatly improve the elongating of holes for slots or simply making the hole larger as the reciprocating saw has the perfect action. Thanks.
 
That looks like it'll work - thanks - mind numbing back and forth with a round file to elongate a hole looks to be history. You're a time saver. Thanks again.

Here's another option Tom—I make a lot of elongated holes for slots (pic from just yesterday). I punch them on an ironworker now...but before I got this beautiful machine I made them with a nibbler. Either a hand, electric or pneumatic one works great. You just drill your hole as always, insert the nibbler and cut up or down to elongate the hole. Then just a round file on the edges (instead of filing the whole length). It works great.

Works great that is on sheet metal up to 18 gauge or so....plate would be your file solution LOL.
 
I think pneumatic are the best option. They are cheap and small enough to get into tight places. Check the rating on them for sheet metal gauge. Below are my electric and hand nibblers. The electric (from Princess Auto) is too heavy for me now. For plate slots maybe try a metal burr in a large rotary tool?

I bet it's one of those tools not everyone has a use for, but if you do a certain task repeatedly, you can't live without. I wonder how it would compare to a die grinder/carbide burr run off?
