Proud to be Canadian song

Amusing, and I know was meant for fun .... but feel good platitudes won't cut it ..... despite voters insatiable appetite for them. e.g. Our fearless leader says we'll get through this together, hot on the heels of moving his multibillion business to NYC. Meanwhile we trail 49/50 states in GDP/Capita and have almost 2x the income and sales tax of the one we beat as well as trailing most OECD countries in GDP/capita growth.....and no one is saying anything about, demanding better or doing anything to rectify it.

I'm 8th generation and am not going anywhere .... but its bloody hard not to question the sanity of trying to run a business here, especially manufacturing. Sorry for being dark, just calling it as I see it and imo the country would be better off if we starting paying attention to how serious this is and demanded better, regardless of it being unpleasant.

Tried to stay away from the worst of the politics, but it is a politically based thread. :)

I’m going to show my bias as a son of two professional musicians- much as I like Gloria Gaynors song We Will Survive, she’s a New Jersey American disco star. Not even close to Canadian. Difficult to escape American culture and influence, n’est pas?

Now if the Guess Who’s American Woman was suggested…

As Mcgyver says, I am trying to stay away from politics here, but it has been interesting to learn where not only my groceries come from, my work and machine shop supplies, but also my cultural influences.

Technically, I probably should delete the whole thread...... But as long as the emotions don't take over I'm gunna leave it alone. The other mods are welcome to disagree and kill it.

I am very proud to be Canadian, to carry our flag, and to contribute to building a stronger country, a stronger economy, and a better future for young Canadians.

But I'd like the song a lot better if it focussed on surviving the challenges and didn't bash our neighbours. "Your not welcome anymore"? Well, politics and politicians aside, I happen to like my American friends a lot, and they are welcome in my home anytime.

In 2024, 1.97 million new cars and trucks were sold in Canada. (247,000 cars, 1,670,000 trucks).
Meanwhile, Canada assembles 1.9 million motor vehicles per year. Only 12% of these were sold in Canada.

Good facts to keep in our minds. I'd add that every assembly plant job generates 3 jobs in the rest of the economy.

It used to be that we built 2 vehicles here for every one we sold here. Those were very good days for Canada. But other factors have brought equality. That's where we are now.

It might be worth looking at content/parts too. I'd venture an educated guess that we are ahead on that front vs the USA but behind vs international. If you don't, I will try to do that later today.

I'm proud to be and to mention I'm a Canadian and former service member. Have a good one.

Thanks, I'm not saying you shouldn't be .... and the current reality wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't care.

What triggers me (not at all directed at you) is the national zeal for feel good, do nothing platitudes in the face some serious issue we, imo, should be a bit worked up about. It's not the politicians fault end of the day, .... why would they initiate the changes needed and upheaval that would ensue unless people were demanding it? Which they are not because hey, "elbows up" and "we'll get through this together" seems to carry the day.

Canadian content has been a question we have asked ourselves for as long as I can remember, and that's 65 years of reading the newspaper. Which I no longer do, there is nothing in it anymore. . Downwindtracker, my nom de plume comes from that even. We'll muddle along as always.

American Women has memories for me, I had an American girl friend about that time.

Fondly recall my junior high language arts teacher using music to teach language to a 13 year old version of me that was a poor and failing student. Ran into that teacher 40+ years later and had the chance to thank him for setting me on a better path. One of the groups we analyzed was the Guess Who, and yes, American Woman. That song, New Mother Nature, and Undone are still favourites.

One of the world is a small place stories: Lenny Kravitz re recorded American Woman and paid enough royalties to the original guys for Burton Cummings to buy a very nice house in the best Winnipeg neighborhood. Also can’t help but smile that one of my childhood friends was Kravitz’s keyboard player for years.

I'll be the odd man out- I prefer the USA laws and constitution compared to our system. In the USA they have rights, in Canada we have privileges. It took me awhile to wrap my head around USA laws, but I admire the fact individual states can write state law, that contravene federal law. I think that's a better approach. I don't think that's politics, that's an opinion based on facts

Keep in mind I miss Gord Downie, Don Cherry, Red Green and Bob n Doug McKenzie. I was just through Thunder Bay by the Terry Fox memorial. I went to a wedding last year in Minnesota and brought maple syrup and butter tarts. I'm proud of my heritage and what makes us distinctly Canadian

BUT, hearing Toronto banning street hockey, Hamilton banning tobogganing, cities banning fireworks on Canada Day, etc makes me shake my head. Heck somebody I know was asked not to fly the Canadian flag on his personal vehicle while on company jobsites. What's next, no more pond hockey or snowball fights?

For half my high school I went to a Catholic Boys day school taught by the I Christian Brothers of Ireland. Some of the brothers were American in those days. Brother Dalton , an American phrased it best, "In theory Americans have more freedoms , in practice, Canadians have more freedoms. "

The bar the Reef in Point Roberts was where the Guess Who successor the BTO put together their sound. I drank across the street in the Breakers, a converted salmon cannery.

Likely some members can relate to Dusty’s ramblings. When I first started school we paid homage to the British Union Jack, sang God Save the King, followed by God Save the Queen. It wasn't until June 27, 1980 O Canada was adopted as our national anthem.

In nautical terms I’ve been around the hazardous horn meaning (Cape Horn) many times in my lifetime.

Yes I’m dating myself here, one old codger and loving every moment!

From across the border, I figure we have the best neighbors possible. a spat every now and then is to be expected. With Tim's and Guess Who, life is good. Seen Guess Who many years ago, ticket cost was $2.

Really? 400?

@Martin w - Typically, I go as slow as I can on a 1" or bigger shaft. That's 70 rpm. I assume steel. For harder steels I wish I could go slower.

Gunna have to try faster next time as per @DPittman's advice.
Well of course it really all depends on material, knurler, etc. I think 500 rpm would be maximum for that size but the recommended range is fairly large I think. I've found that the higher range usually works better for me.
I also wasn't sure if Martin was serious with his question. :)
