  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

One more question ISO 40

"yes". A "40" taper is a "40" taper. Bt, Cat, ISo, NMTB. Where they differ is the pull stud ends, the v flange, and the drawbar/pullstud thread. The taper is the same though. NT/NMTB has a 1"x1" pilot on the drawbar end. ISO is similar with a 25mm pilot. BT and CAT don't have the pilot. BT and ISO have metric drawbar/pullstud threads. CAT and NMTB have inch. BT and CAT are meant for pull stud retention (think CNC) ISO and NMTB are meant for drawbar retention.

You "can" use bt and cat in an old iso/nmtb spindle with longer drawbar/pullstud adaptor, but you can't use ISO/NMTB in a cat/bt spindle because they need a pull stud for retention.

I think that's the gist of it, if I'm wrong somebody correct me, I'm going off memory, and it ain't that good anymore lol.

Yes. Manual says ISO 40. Cat 40 seems plentiful and cheaper. Getting different answers from different suppliers when I get quotes. I live a very rural area and 2 hours from most suppliers so I would like to get proper holders at the best prices of course.

I'm 95.78% sure you could use a cat 40, with a longer 5/8"-11 drawbar. You "may" have to modify the drive dogs on the spindle, but I highly doubt it.

I seem to recall seeing someone(probably on practical machinist) make stubby drawbar adaptor extensions to use cat tooling in ISO/NMTB spindle years ago. That way you could use them interchangeably with ISO tooling, but if you're starting from scratch, I'd just make a new longer drawbar, and go all CAT from the get go. Tooling is dirt cheap, and plentiful on the use market. If you have any ISO tooling you could sell it to offset the cost.

I don't want to lead you down the garden path, as there's a 4.22% chance I'm wrong, but you could probably find a used cat 40 holder for under $30 (plus shipping) to try it out before committing to buying more.
