I don't think we can call this a bug because I don't think it is a zenforo issue. However it is an issue that users need to be aware of.

When I am logged on, I expect that my logon status would show that I am on-line. When I am logged off, I expect to be shown as logged off. These generally work they way they should.

However, if I open a new browser window to do some side research or if I walk away from my computer or phone and close my browser, I would expect to be shown as logged off. But.... I still show as logged on. In order to show as logged off, I have to explicitly logoff.

From now on, I plan to explicitly logoff whenever I leave the forum so folks know I am not on-line. It's a bit of a PIA.

Isn't that the same way most forums or websites that require a login operate? The only ones I can think of that log you out automatically are banking sites.
Many sites that require a login will ask if you want to be remembered and then just automatically log you back in the next time you navigate to the site.
I think that is how Facebook does a lot of its tracking. You may not have Facebook open but it can still see you when you go looking up shotguns or bacon unless you have explicitly logged out.

This is standard, if you dont log off from almost all sites you will be shown to remain as online until any default inactivity period has passed and then you may be shown as offline.

Until just last week I never logged off on any of my devices... because I dont have a CHMW login password.

Passwords are easy. Back in the day using the modem to log onto a bulletin board to download on the old Pemtium computer trying to login, all passwords tried are taken, finally I used
“ This call is from Canada “ ……. Password accepted.

It's not what I expected, so I am surprised to find it like that.

As is, if the last thing I did before going to sleep was check the latest posts, I will appear to have been on-line all night long. Seems I am the only one assuming that I would get shown as logged off, so I'll just logoff from now on.

Want me to force a new one?

I'm as yet undecided. I've been logging on for a very long time just using my google credentials. Seems to have no issues so perhaps it is best not to mess with things

You know how to reach me outside of the forum if you ever have problems or need a change. Happy to serve.

I'm one of those people who has dozens of browser tabs open and stays logged in to whatever-the-site is all the time (Except Financial stuff!) Password manager takes care of having to remember (although I do have paper backup) but for most things who need the extra typing and clicks? And the computer is "on" most of the day even if it's asleep. So almost all the time that it says I'm online, I'm not actually there. I suspect no one cares too much.
