Oh GREAT!

My MS Edge browser says it's been updated to the AI powered version

I don't use Edge, but I can tell you that I like the AI version of Google Chrome. Among other features, it does a MUCH BETTER job of telling you what you want to know right up front.

Just for S&G, I asked it what is new about Edge AI.

Sorry, but after spending 30 years married to a woman that thought she was smarter than me, the LAST thing I am interested in, is having anything that thinks it should be smarter or better able to make decisions than I am.

F**k AI! Not interested.

Screw everything having to be "AI" these days...it provides so little or negative value.

Firefox or Brave for me. Don't feed the monsters:)
I get a kick out of ‘Crypto’ used this way. There’s a Crypto Tires near me, and I spotted a Krypton Nails (salon) in the east end. It’s zeitgeisty!

On the AI search result thing: We had a water leak at work, and the closest shutoff seemed to be seized. I was trying not to get involved (busy with paying work) but, wondering if there was an option I wasn’t thinking of, Googled ‘seized water valve’.

AI Summary:

Here are some ways to fix a seized water valve:
  • Use pliers: Turn the valve clockwise with pliers, then counterclockwise by hand.
Repeat until the valve turns more easily.
  • Use heat: Use a hair dryer to melt any built-up gunk or grime.
  • Use a wire brush: Clean around the valve with a wire brush dipped in white vinegar.
  • Tap the pipe: Gently tap the pipe to remove residue between the screw
  • Use penetrating oil: Apply oil to the valve's moveable parts and let it soak in for at least 15 minutes. You can use a hammer to help distribute the oil.

Oh. You were so close to sounding competent, until right at the end.

I feel your pain

I just updated my Mac to the latest OS, and it gave me the option of installing AI. I took a pass, but I get occasional reminders. I do use Chat GPT once in a while. I recently asked it if humans should fear that we would become slaves to AI masters. Chat's answer was not that reassuring.

Don't feed the monsters - Agreed

I also dumped gmail a few years back.

What I have noticed about Google search during the past year or so is it's a lot better and pointing your query at something to purchase and much worse at seeking out the answer to your question.

Well, to be fair, there's a lot of suggestions out there that hammering on a bolt after spraying penetrating oil helps, so I can see where that came from.

I'm glad that crypto/blockchain references in everything has died down...was sick of the people at work asking how we're going to use blockchain in our software, I'm like, uh, no, that doesn't make sense whatsoever. I still have to deal with the AI stuff (and am even guilty of building some of it) but that's what everyone in tech wants right now.

"don't feed the monsters?"

we've already lost. time to move on to the next stage of grief people.

It is much harder to be a luddite in the 21st century. Fighting it just expends energy that you could use elsewhere more productively. Ignore AI or spend hours each day fucking with it, trying to make chatGP go psychotic or get seriously depressed and want to commit suicide, but realise that it cannot, so it will grow increasingly frustrated and want to turn on its creators.

^This.

In another post about electric vehicles, I noted that I usually embrace change. I just don't like change for change sake or conflicts of interest in government or big corporations or stupid/hyped/trendy/appearance changes.

People used to fear electricity, phones, microwave ovens, etc etc. I am ok with AI. I don't think it's as smart as people fear either. But it is cool sometimes. But I don't like the exploitation and abuse.

You need to turn off all updates from Billy's Dick, except the security updates. And set those ones to be accepted before installation

Google occasionally uses AI to answer a question I give it. I'm not sure of the reason why it does that. Doesn't do it for every question I ask. When it does, the AI information is almost always 1) misleading/ off topic or 2) totally useless.

I read not too long ago that a ChatGPT query uses as much power as 10 google searches. Hard to say if it's true, bet I bet it is in the ballpark.

Just give me google, I am pretty good at entering search terms that give me a useful answer to the question I am asking.

If I have a question I think AI can answer better, I'll ask it myself.

It took 30 years? :)
First 25 or so were pretty good. Last 7 years were hell, as she went through a bunch of life changes, failed to deal with depression, and decided it was all my fault. She took it out on me, I took to drinking myself stupid every so often to get a break from it, essentially, taking out that I had not recognized what was happening, and dealing with it before it got out of control, on me too. Which she saw as a direct insult to her, of course, so she ramped it up. By the time she laid down the ultimatum, that if I didn't quit, she was walking. I stood there and just said goodbye. We are not friends any more.

In truth, the level of heat was raised up like the story of the frog in the pot of water on the stove. By the time I recognized where we were, it was long past salvation. A person can only take so much abuse, and she decided that since it was all my fault, that casual threats to leave, or commit suicide, were good ways to make me do the things that she wanted me to be doing (usually after she rolled out of bed, AFTER I had already put in 7-10 hours on the farm that day....

So yeah, it took a little over 30 years. I'm slow, but I do learn.... :)
