new member intro Alberta

Hello,

I am a new member in Alberta, came to this place after losing out on an absolute dream machine lathe in my area that someone else beat me to on facebook marketplace since I don't go on there often enough to catch it. I am hoping to find advice on metallurgy and guidance/tutelage in troubleshooting my assorted shop related struggles in life.

I am messing around with blacksmithing, and welding, recently getting back into oxy acetylene as that was my favorite when they taught me to weld in highschool. I am a millwright by trade so I dabble in a bit of everything. I associate with the local SCA and HEMA scene somewhat as well as tell myself I participate in watch and clock repair though my workspace for that has been neglected for the past year.

Currently I am working towards getting my workspaces serviceable so I can practice my hobbies at home more consistently. I also hope to be able to catch the next EMCO maximat lathe that comes up for sale in my area for less than market value because I am going to beat myself up for that for the rest of my life I think.

Happy to interact with new people and get guidance on where to watch for tool acquisition opportunities.

Kind regards

Welcome. This is also a good place to watch for classifieds as we have some diligent members that repost ads that might be of interest to other members.
thanks, yeah, I am beating myself up really bad over missing this deal. 1800$ EMCO Maximat v10 with the milling head and a lot of tooling. Hardly a stone's throw from my door. Rotten luck on my part I'll do my best to not mope about it too long.

I missed out on a CNC mill recently that I've been feeling similar about. I just try to remember that "once in a lifetime" deals actually come up somewhat often, although rarely on exactly the same equipment. If you keep yourself open to other, similar equipment you can probably get an even better deal if you're patient (maybe even an upgrade!).

Also, hello from Tottenham Ontario.

I have to keep that in mind, I also need to get educated on similar machines in that class of 110v 15 amp with reasonable to high precision and quality. There are too many of these machines to be read up well enough to actually have it all committed to memory.

Welcome from Taber, AB.

Finding a good lathe is tough from my experience. I paid more then I ever thought I would to get a nice one.

Be super careful about marketplace, and especially machines below market value on marketplace.

There are extremely dedicated scammers that post very tempting ads for very nice machines at door crasher prices.

In my experience, most legitimate ads range from only slightly below to way above market value. Way below is a red flag for me for sure.

Good luck.

When they offered I deposit on it sight unseen my hackles went up. I am choosing to believe this is simply God protecting me from my own avarice as I am not ready to put a lathe in my garage because my current material storage solutions is ye olde' pile of wood and metal stacked in the middle of the floor.
