Hi Guys,

I am currently making a copper ice ball press.

I am stock with porosity in some of my cast (see image below), and from what I heard, I would need to add very little amount of phosphor copper 15% to my molten copper before pouring.

Does anyone has some on hand and looking to sell me a very small qty ? A few drops would be sufficient I guess to finalise my projet.
BTW, I will of course pay for shipping, I am in Quebec.

Else, if you have any sources in Canada for small qty, that would also work.

Thanks !!!

When you say drops! Does that mean something in liquid form? I do have some copper round and bar stock. I have no idea what it's metallurgy is! Where are you located?

Hi Don,

What is the diameter of your round copper stock ?
BTW, I am close to Montreal.

Thanks !!

1 inch and 3/4 inch. I also have some rectangular 1 X 1/2 I think. Again I have no idea of its contents. I can PM with pictures if you like?

Thx !! Actually, I was more looking at 3" or larger diameter... not easy to find.
This is why I cast them myself and I need some copper phosporus pellets to clean/deoxidize my melted copper before pouring. This should help with the porosity that you can see in my image.

I tried to buy some phoshor copper shot from Foundry Supply Source in Milton ON earlier this year for degassing coppers alloys, but they were all out when I was there. John (sales guy there) told me I would not have liked the price even if they did have any in stock... Might be worth getting a quote though. He's broken up big bags of stuff like that to sell small quantities to hobbyists before, so you might have some luck there.

It's not all that easy to find, I guess, but I've heard it's possible to find phosphor copper brazing rods that could work. Might have to hunt around a bit. Probably not in the same percentage as the shot that is sold specifically for degassing coppers either, but it should work.

You don't want to use a lot of it, I think it's supposed to be dosed at something like an ounce of degasser to 100# of copper (just going from memory here). I read that using too much can cause castings to become brittle and more susceptible to corrosion.

Good luck!

Jeff
