I could give you all sorts of advise & guidance on building cannons big enough to be noticed by the neighbors. They are good conversation starters as yard ornament but really get folks attention when being fired....they will attract a crowd .
Personally, I wouldn’t mind learning more about cannons, do you just tamp the powder and fire the wad? or do you need an actual projectile to give the powder something to push against to get full burn?

asking for a friend....

Been to a few Black Powder "shoots" where they have had "Cannon Shoots". Everything from little golf ball cannons on up to full scale field guns shooting soup cans filled with concrete. Probably some bigger that I haven't seen. Some beautifully built guns too - lots of polished brass, solid Oak carriages.
I should know, but I don't. Are cannons even legal in Canada?
A bit out of touch but I think (without going on a political rant) that's probably come to an end ?
Used to be that smooth bore muzzle loaders shooting Black powder were "accepted".
I'm thinking the new regulations limiting bore size to (forget if it's now 19 or 20mm bore dia. limit) have probably brought an end to that (sadly).

The retort from a cannon can be had with just a roll of tinfoil with an amount of Black Powder inside. In my small cannon ( 1.625 bore ) I use 300 grains of black and in my full size "field piece" civil war replica (pop can bore) I use 1/4 lb of black...not really much difference in the retort...both will wake the dead, but the muzzle blast/fireball from the big gun is outstanding. n projectile needed for full retort/blast effect but if I do use a projectile then the recoil becomes a factor. With a 3 lb projectile at BP velocities ( crono'ed at 1175 fps) that big gun ( aprox. 600 lbs) will recoil back 4 feet in the wink of an eye.

As for the legalities now, they are in limbo at the moment. For years if they were fire with a fuse they were considered non-firearms in the firearms legislation but 2 yrs ago as Cuslog mentioned the powers that be introduced a regulation thru IOC that any "devise" that has a bore of 20 mm is now a prohibited devise. I was going to mention this at the time on this forum but was "censored" from gun politics conversation by a mod at the time so thought "what the hell if he doesnt want to know the ramifications to folks on this forum so be it.
Just got called away from the computer so will continue this later.

Just think of the impression it makes when you say to unwanted solicitation, please leave before I need to load the canon with a casual hand gesture.

Surprisingly very little on the web that I could find. I might still have my notes and templates for the carriage and a couple of wheels.
There’s actually a bunch on eBay, although shipping might be fun

What powder do you use in a 50 cal? Still straight up muzzle loading black powder?

Actually no, I don't. I like Black Horn Smokeless. Not nearly as showy as black powder but generates better velocity and better accuracy without the messy black powder cleanup.
