Morrisburg Flea Market Finds

I went with my parents this morning to the flea market in Morrisburg, Ontario and I feel that I made off rather well. There was one seller who had a couple boxes of machining related tools and here's what I picked from the lot.

Tesa or maybe Tesatast or maybe Verdict Dial Test Indicator - $30

Moore and Wright 4" tap handle - $5

Moore and Wright No. 405 Surface Gauge - $30

And best of all a Mitutoyo 103-221A 6-7" Micrometer - $50

With this micrometer, I now have a complete Mitutoyo 0.0001" set from 0-12" set (I already had the rest including standards and the box). The the standard was even still in the wax!

Last but not least, a nice pair of Moore and Wright dividers. The seller threw this in with the rest

Eclipse actually made one of similar size and design (including knurled locknut). Here's the two side by side. I definitely prefer the feel of the Moore and Wright, but the Eclipse served me well until now.

Definitely a first for me. And to think that all this time I thought it was "just the way things were" that a tap handle would loosen as you used it. I guess it didn't bother me enough to wonder if there was a better way. That's another project then!

That's what I always thought too until I got a Starrett. It didn't have a lock ring, but it never loosened off.

Since then, I have gone out of my way to find the other sizes on marketplace and Kijiji. None of them loosen off. It was an eye opener.

I cannot say what it is about them that prevents them from backing off. It's a very good question. What I can say is that whatever they do, it works! I've probably tried 10 different brands over the years and ALL of them loosen off except the Starrett. I've never owned a Moore & Wright.

That's what I always thought too until I got a Starrett.

I'm unlikely to find a Starrett in this neck of the woods, but maybe I'll modify one of mine to add a lock nut someday.
