Bit of import Lathe repair happening. I'm looking for 5x30 and 5x50mm roll pins. Fastener Force in Victoria? Nope. Fastenal? Have to order them in, box of 100. McMaster-Carr? !00's, not to mention cross border. Home hardware, Home Depot, local auto parts place? Nope. Spaenaur? Don't even show up when I search their site. Grainger? Did not see if they are a stock item in Victoria, but only 100's anyway.

Amazon has them, of course. More than I need, but not 100 pk. I was hoping to find a more local source. If I have to order them it may as well be Amazon, at least they're quick and no shipping surprises.
Are there any obvious stones I have left un-turned?

5mm is a bout 9 thou over 3/16th. In theory one could enlarge the slot of a 3/16 pin and squeeeeze it down just the right amount, but I'd rather get the proper part if it's reasonably doable. If I had to get the machine running before my shift was over, yeah, I'd try that.

Been there, done that.
Grainger does not have 5mm as long as I need, only 6mm.
Speanauer search for roll pin, spring pin, slotted pin, slotted spring tension pin all come up "no results".
And in any case if they had them I'd have to order and wait.

I guess we're not quite as bi-lingual a country as we'd like to think. I guess it's a deep sigh and hit the Buy Button at Amazon.

I just received some smaller diameter metrics from Ali. My notes say ordered Mar-5, delivered Mar-19 which is pretty decent IMO. Unless you are in a bigger time constraint

I searched 'M5 roll pin' but in some cases like this they use different words 'elastic cotter cylindrical'.
Random example $3.22/20 but these are stainless, regular black ones are probably half that price.
Another trick is even though they have a delivery date, some stores allow you to ratchet up delivery & (depending on the item) it may not cost that much more.
Inevitably I buy a range of likely sizes so I don't have to go high price scrounging 'next time'.

Thanks all. I have ordered some. I don't expect these are something I need to keep "in stock" so I should be fine for years to come, fingers crossed.

I have had pretty good luck with finding metric nuts and bolts locally* so I hoped other metric stuff like this might also be. Naive of me I guess. My self-imposed time frame was "I'd like to deal with this within a day or two, not a week or two".

*For a given value of "Locally". Fastener force in Victoria has been pretty good, and even the hardware stores often have the most common sizes.

Oh, and for those who are also scavengers and pack rats, all the free treadmills I have dismantled for their motors have also been a good source of metric bolts.

No sweat. Turns out that I do have 5mm roll pins but only 30mm long. Easy to shorten, but not so easy to make them longer. In most cases, you can use 2 end to end though. If it turns out you could use some after all, just lemme know.

I bought a container of various sizes from PA just on the off chance I’ll need them before I die.

That's my favorite way to make sure I'll never need something.

The best way to guarantee you will need one is to forget where you put the ones you know you have. In my case that usually means I put it away where it's supposed to be - like inside a drawer or a cabinet, but they hide on me. And when I get the new ones and put them away, I usually put them right beside the old ones that magically appear right where I couldn't find them.

That's why I hate organizing things. Better to just spread it all out in piles on a surface so I can always find it.
