All you were doing was taking off the high spots, I don't see how this went wrong? were you aggressive with it? to lap you would use a good stub and fine lapping compound to get an idea of it's condition this will shoe the points of contact then make a decision from there as to how to proceed.

Well the reamer didn't seem to be doing much other than leaving a ridge at the ding spots. I got more aggresive and things got worse. I imagine wrong technique and poor tools ( theme of my shop some days)
