  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Linux CNC Support Software Question?

I Tried, It Broke

Background: I have a few engraving machines, laser engraver uses Lighburn software, rotary engravers using Estlcam software.

I’m old school, and make my drawings in an ancient 2d drafting program. I’ve never been able to wrap my head around 3d CAD, my brain is wired to think of drafting in terms of pencil on paper. I draw my designs and save the results as dxf files.

Both Lightburn and Estlcam are integrated CAM/CNC programs, I can just open a dxf or stp file and the front end generates the appropriate g-code for the machine control back end.

I’m building a small CNC router, and thought I’d try LinuxCNC. It seems to run just fine on an old PC and I have most of the bits and pieces to make a parallel-port breakout setup.

I’m confused about generating g-code for LinuxCNC. What simple software is available in Linux to convert 2d dxf CAD files into g-code?

Any software that outputs g-code should suffice. Can Lightburn output a g-code txt file?

I'm pretty sure your Estlcam software can be used to generate the G-code for LinuxCNC. Just pick Linux CNC as the post processor (note I have not used Estlcam before but was curious about it).
