Due to the locations I work, often there are rules about phone and camera use. However right now I’m at a spot I can share a little.

I work as a field machinist, primarily repairing large dirt/mining equipment. Currently working on a track frame rebuild. Tonight’s job is to finish the bearing bores on the drive end of the frame.

23 and 5/8” diameter, +/- .001.

Mark, what is the dimension you are cutting? another of those 30" jobs?

Ignore this, just saw it in your post

Had this problem at most of the food processing facilities I visited, but I needed to document what was going on so the design team could understand both existing conditions and the client’s expectations. Usually was allowed to take photos but had to have them reviewed before I left.

Field machining & millwright work is always interesting & usually a challenge: looks good.

Things are only guided by the centre bar, or is there a steady that rides on the already machined surface? If the former it seem like you'd get tons of chatter. Would love to hear more details.

Just the centre bar. There is a sort of rule of thumb of how far the space is between the support bearings along the bar. Seems like everything I do I’m at or past the maximum, so I have to use other tricks to make things work.

Just for scale though, that bar is 3.5” in diameter.

Very cool. I wish I could take some pics of the places I've been and things I've worked on recently. Phone use is verboten on the job so I typically just leave it in the car, unless I need it for communication with crew. The only "machine tool" I get to use on the job anymore is a magdrill :(. Depends where I am, and who's looking I sometimes get to sneak into a maintenance shop to mill or turn something down, but it's rare. Mostly torches, angle grinders and BFHs.
