Integrated 1-1/2 chuck

On 'integrated' chucks like this, are the threaded holes in the backplate intended to jack (un-press) the back plate off from I assume would be a typical recess?
ie. could this style of chuck be re-purposed by removing the backplate? Or maybe there is more to it?

That looks like the same chuck HH Roberts sells. If it is then yes the threaded holes will press the backplate off.
Edit - the HH Roberts chuck are 5".

Usually they can be repurposed but sometimes they cannot - depends on how integrated is the back plate - i.e. is it a flat back chuck with a back plate attached to it OR is it an integrated chuck. Integrated chuck would have the back plate serve to hold the internals of the scroll. Still can be re-used BUT now you need to do a lot of possible leg work - i.e. figure out how to change things.
 
And on Bison chucks you will need those jacking holes :-) the plate is a very tight fit. Other brands not so much.
I replaced the 1 1/2-8 back plate with a 1 3/4-8 one.
 
This bison chuck can accept another back plate. It has to be precision machined, as the registration is a tight slip fit on the outer parts of the chuck...

That's exactly what I was wondering & I don't know where I came across a picture that is sticking in my mind. It may have even been a collet chuck. But seems to me the parting line on that was through the plane of tightening studs, not behind like model pictured.
 
If the parting line is 1/2 way through the tightening pinions, then:

You can chuck up the entire body, and turn off the mounting boss for the threaded holder, face the plate, and then use that to make a new registration ring, and thus reattach a new adapter plate - of course new holes will need to be tapped the the new adapter plant, but no biggie...

There is always a way!
 
I'll correct my statement, having just gone through this tonight with a 3285 (4" Bison). The backplate is part of the mechanism, so can't be eaisly relaced. In my case is is threaded for a BS0 dividing head, and of course some cretin has lost the one set of jaws. :-) I hade been hoping to swap this partial chuck with a complete one.

On the 5" from HH Roberts, you can however repplace the backplate, it is not part of the mechanism.

The actual chuck says 3284-4" & 3172-05. Not that the thread matters but I'm pretty sure its the 1.5-8 'bolted on' threaded backplate. I'll take a picture next time

But it doesn't really show the required detail.


I might be getting myself confused with integrated Set-Tru chucks, they have a different adapter split line.

Hmmm.. that looks quite similar to what I referenced other than mine is 4".
Do you have any reference or a pic of what the mechanism is? Like machined features that engage the scroll or axles?
