Help Identify lathe

Hey all, sorry for the abrupt entrance. Been searching high and low for a lathe in Calgary and this just came up. Could anyone please help id this lathe and help out with pricing of it. The ad said it’s a clashing and that’s all. Any help at all would be great!

That’s a Clausing lathe it looks like the one I inherited from my Dad they are a nice machine. This is mine with the left cover removed. It looks like yours uses the change gears for threading.

Thanks Tom! Would you recommend such a machine for a total newbie? The one I pictured appears to be missing the threading dial. Have you had to replace any parts on yours?

I’ve found it to be a good lathe the only problem I have had with it was that star type dial on the apron it wasn’t releasing properly and I took it apart and installed a spring to help separate the mechanism. I see there is another Clausing further down the page $1900.
you could always pick up a gearbox later perhaps.

That star dial being the lever for the power feed? Do you do a lot of threading on yours? How big of a pain is it to change gears?

it looks like a nice lathe. You will get used to having charst for threading and feed speeds. it is a great starter lathe.

All setup and ready to go! Can’t seem to find any manuals free online. So before I fire it up can someone please help me with some of the functions.

the red level top left is the clutch?
down below the headstock there is a shift assembly. What do the 3 hole selections exactly do to the gearing?

just want to cover all basics before I fire it up and mess something up.

cheers!

Unplug it and turn it over by hand and operate your levers. You will see how they function. The three holes on the gear selector I believe are forward, neutral and reverse for your lead screw.

The top lever is the clutch ( right to engage ) push it to the left to brake the three vertical holes are feed directions I never use the middle one but it probably is neutral. On the apron the sliding one is feeding to the top slide or carage the middle being neutral. The star handle turns clockwise to engage the feeds for the crosslide and carage and the lever is for threading.
you can slide the selector on the apron an feel it engage the feed of choice by trying to turn either feed handle.

Just started up the machine and there is a very loud squeak coming from the belt. Spindle speed appears very low and I can stop the chuck with my hand. The clutch is engaged. Is this going to require me to rip apart the headstock and change that seamless belt?

Where the Allan key is, is there supposed to be a pin going through the main sounder shaft. I can move that gear on the left and three pulley sheaves around the shaft freely

If it appears you have to disassemble headstock components for a belt replacement I would suggest you consider using a link type belt that can be put on without that disassembly. They are expensive but they also run smoother.

Before you do that check the bull gear on the right there is a threaded knob that is loosened off for use with the back gear ( that’s the lever at the rear rightside behind the chuck ) towards the lathe engages it so put it to the rear position. The above threaded knob should be tight this engages the chuck to the drive tighten but not over tighten

Saved me there Tom, I tightened that thread knob up and now it’s good. I really wish I had some literature on this damn thing

I’ll see what I have I belive I have some I just snug mine up with pliers. Oh and the sliding gear that’s on the left side cover is for speeds and feeds too It should say on your chart.

You can still thread but you will have to stop and back out the cutter then use the forward reverse power switch to bring the carrage back before the next cut.
