Not gonna work. The thinnest section will work harden, then proceed (as you move the hardened zone around) to eventually break off as fatigue gets the best of the metal.

So the brass piece didn't work out. Seemed to get a little springier after some flexing but ultimately deformed quite easily once installed and wouldn't reliably advance the magazine.
Tried the same with some spring steel that was .5mm thick and it seems to still be working after a couple of mags.
