Facebook does not consider low $$ value fraud to be a real world harm even when committed by organized crime on a massive scale on their platform. This begs the question, will anyone stop using facebook marketplace?

Just the sort of crap you'd expect from a free markets absolutist billionaire.

It's this kind of crap that has kept me from joining Facebook. The cost/benefit ratio never felt right to me. Besides, Craigslist emptied my toy fund long ago.

I had quit facebook years ago because it was a cesspool, but returned when it became apparent that more private sellers were using marketplace than kijiji. BTW, Kijiji notifications come so late they're completely useless.

Craigslist Toronto has sucked for a decade at least and only people DT list items for sale, and none are selling machines or tools.

But, I'm now at the point where I'm as tooled up with machines as I can fit, and I'm finding auctions or accusize better for tooling so I dont need marketplace any longer. Only FOMO is making me hesitate axing my account.

I go through FB ads regularly mostly browsing looking for that thing that you didn’t know you need but I always go to see it in person and pay cash.

and if you got murdered meeting a seller in person, it is very likely FB wouldn't have acted on a report of the scammers
This might be just a bit over the top. I couldn't find any reports of FB-related murders, although there are reports of assaults. Either way, FB has the worst system for reporting scams of any kind, and zero controls on any postings.

I'm not so sure. I think @TorontoBuilder was just exaggerating to make a point. I don't know of any murders yet either. But there are a few beatings, robberies, and thefts. And the fraud often reaches into the thousands of dollars. So I think it's reasonable to think it's only a matter of time before someone does die.

How did you mange to miss the Tim Bosma murder? While it was kijiji related there are many assaults and robberies related to facebook marketplace.

The comment was intended as hyperbole but the message is true. FB could care less if users are murdered. FB is a psychopathic corporate entity with one goal, to profit off the backs of users to the greatest extent possible

If you got Toronto news you'd know it is far more than "a few" beatings, robberies and thefts" it is many per day

My wife spent the day dealing with this. Saw a post from a trusted friend about liquidating items belonging to a relative being placed in a care home. We are of an age where this is a common occurrence. Sent deposit to hold an item as requested and immediately realized it may have been a mistake. Friend's account had been hacked in the previous 25 minutes. Said friend was locked out of her account, passwords had been changed and 2 factor authentication didn't work. CIBC couldn't reverse the e-transfer. Tangerine account of the scammer had already accepted the e-transfer. After spending the day on the phone the scammer's Tangerine account has been frozen and flagged as fraudulent and both banks have told my wife that there is a process to recover the missing funds but it happens through Interac. Fraud report given to local RCMP. We won't miss a mortgage payment or anything but it does put a damper on the day.

Sort of like the post office thefts. I bought a Lee casting furnace in the US and when it came to Mississauga, one of the good old boys paid the import duty and put it under his Christmas tree. Canada Post refused to tell me who the credit card holder was.

Good for you, I never will join it, but my wife has, she markets garlic through it.:(

Facebook Market is a meet-up tool at the end of the day. Use common sense and don't meet people at 1am in a back ally to do your transactions. This would apply for ads from ol fashion newspapers or bulletin boards.

The question is if Facebook structurally encourages dangerous scenarios. Not doing anything about scams definitely counts as allowing and thereby encouraging scams. But murders.... rare enough that isn't structural. People get murdered riding cabs, as both drivers and passengers, precisely because of the precarious scenarios way more. That's why they traditionally taxi services have "call 911" lights on the cabs, require licenses, and other accountability tools as much as possible... all the things Uber try to skirt.

okay, so to be clear the armed robberies I referred to with pepper spray, knives and guns are not happening at 1am. They're in daylight in public and occur very quickly. Usually involving cell phones, ipads, or branded clothing and young vulnerable sellers

there is a clear relationship between armed robberies and murders and at any time an armed robbery can go south.

I never said facebook structurally encourages murder, and particularly not in regard to marketplace, but they are indiffferent to fraudulent ads by obviously fake profiles and to those using obviously fake profiles to respond to ads of vulnerable sellers
