Electric ventilation motor probmems.

I figured I'd ask just in case there is a fix to this.
I have this little fan I use for ventilation in my attic. I bought it from P.A. a couple of years ago. The thing turns over relatively freely by hand but when powered up it just buzzes and is locked up and won't spin either way.
Throw away and start new again?

Oh now I see. The back bearing is shot and is un-replaceable. Pressed in bearing housing that will be destroyed if I get it out.

Those fans are supposed to last forever! I had one in the attic of my dog shed that fried the same way.

I replaced it with a small fan in a window instead.

I have swinging doors for the dogs. I found that putting an exhaust fan in the attic or the window solved my biting fly and mosquito issues. The flies and mosquitos are attracted to the IR from the dogs body and the CO in their breath. By sucking air in at the dog doors and venting out at the attic or window, the bugs clustered on the screen at the exhaust and didn't enter the shed even though there was no screen there.

To bad your fan can't be serviced.

Yes I thought it would have lasted longer. Both the front and back bearings are just self aligning bushings with that chewed up fibre stuff they use packed around them. The fibre packing stuff is supposed to hold oil but mine were dried out and they have no provisions for oiling them. I think I might try a new fan again and drill little holes in the motor housing that will allow me to squirt in oil every once in a while.
 
That rear bushing block seems to be held in place with 4 bent over tabs. If there is enough room (and you want to spend some time and a little $ for sealed ball bearings), I would make a bearing block. Replace the front bushing with BB while you are at. The thing will probably last 10 years or more with the mod.
They just use cheap oil impregnated bushings to save cost. I bet if you bought a better quality fan it would come with sealed BBs.

Yes I agree. One of the reasons I think I'm going to stay with the same thing is because I have the ventilation hole boxed up specifically for this fan. I know I probably should look at something better.
