Dome

I've been working oiff and on at fixing up a Baldwin-style 3.5" gauge locomotive that seems to be over 100 years old.My goal is to make an air-operated display model, as the riveted-and-caulked boiler, though sound, would never pass a certification test.

Lots of parts are missing. Among them is the steam dome, which is just a cover for the real dome.

I decided to make something using a huge steel nut found at the dump, a wood form, a piece of sheet copper, and a 12-ton hydraulic press.

I sanded the dome to fit the boiler using sandpaper wrapped around an artillery shell casing stuck in the lathe.

So far so good. Just some fettling and polishing left to do.

Don't laugh too hard. It works for me....
