  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

The Starrett is an inside mic not a depth mic and it looks like there are a few empty rod spaces in the case.

Never heard of Lufkin but it's nicely packaged.

Don't know who makes the Shars mic but it looks complete.

If you go for the Amazon variety I would compare readings with a Starrett or Mit to check for accuracy and repeatability. Someone you know must have one they would be willing to bring over to do the testing with.

If it was between Amazon and Shars I think I would go with Shars, at least they are a known name.

The lufkin in a wood box is nice. The starrett isn't a depth mic..

I'd get a real, Starrett or Mitutoyo since a caliper will do all of what these lesser units will do.

If you simply must have a real depth mic and don't want to shell out for a Starrett or a Mitutoyo, get an Accusize.

Accusize Industrial Tools 0-6'' Range x 4'' Base Depth Micrometer, 0.001'' Resolution, Including 6 Rods, 2025-4201 https://a.co/d/eVex494

Lufkin is a known brand and if older made in the U.S., better quality than SHARS. However, the SHARS is more than adequate.

I have a Craftsman 0 - 3” set and a “Japan Micrometer” (NSK) brand 0 - 4” set:

Eventually, I will modify the Craftsman into a half-base:

I made an offer for the Lufkin, and the seller accepted, so now I just have to be patient.
