DC Motor frequency noise

I replaced the dc brushed variable speed motor in my 10x22 lathe a while ago with factory replacement.

I know the brushes need to wear in on these motors but the motor is generally a louder hummer than the last and has a definite whine/frequency squeal at about 600 rpm that the old motor did not have.

What's going on?
