• Scam Alert. Members are reminded to NOT send money to buy anything. Don't buy things remote and have it shipped - go get it yourself, pay in person, and take your equipment with you. Scammers have burned people on this forum. Urgency, secrecy, excuses, selling for friend, newish members, FUD, are RED FLAGS. A video conference call is not adequate assurance. Face to face interactions are required. Please report suspicions to the forum admins. Stay Safe - anyone can get scammed.

Classic facebook scam...

TorontoBuilder

Sapientia et Doctrina Stabilitas
Guy posts "free lathe" to get interest.

I call...

Guy says it absolutely MUST be moved in by the end of the next day... I say, I think I can make it happen for the right price.

Then asks "what do you want to pay" I told him the reality he was up against and gave him a fair price based on that reality.

I give him what i think a fair price is and say I think my friend will buy it at that price, but I need to check... back and forth we go.

Deal Accepted, my friend got a good price based on limited time and no real inspection under power, he gets the lathe moved.

Then I get hit with the message "Hey John, as I am leaving myself up against a wall waiting until closing day I'd feel more comfortable taking a deposit so I know you guys are going to show up, nothing personal, just need to make sure it's moved in time"

So I say hey, if it is really just about assurances I can send you a dozen references, because this is classic FB scam. But I did agree to ask my friend who was buying the lathe if he can send a token deposit thinking $100 bucks which I said I thought meets his purpose.

So, my friend sends $500....

Long story short....

My friend got a new lathe. Sometimes it is not a scam.

ps. I checked FB account inception date, early 2000s

I checked his FB images using google lens

I checked here to see if anyone noticed scammyness

I checked his phone number reverse directory search,

I checked his company website.

My friend will be selling his CX-706 lathe shortly, DRO, 3 jaw, 4 jaw, QCTP, tooling....
