  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Beekeeper here - trying to learn a new skill

Hey All!

I landed on this forum after searching the net for information regarding a Lux cut manual lathe that I've recently acquired. I'm a fulltime beekeeper, with a small commercial operation in southern Alberta (south of High River). Typical of farmers, you get to dabble in many different trades to try and save a buck here and there as well as problem solve whatever the season throws at you. Earlier this year I bought a 3d printer and started to design a machine that could save time cutting up cleaning pads (6x8") into 1" strips that we use to soak up a batch of glycerine & oxalic acid for mite treatments inside each hive. The machine used 6 rotary knife blades for which I needed to machine custom arbors/hubs for.. I was given a brief lesson on how to use the lathe to machine these hubs out of aluminum from an old mechanic and then proceeded to make something that would eventually work. Long story short, it performed much better than expected and all the commercial guys want one! I don't really like the hub setup I have though, so I want to machine a shaft to the size of the hole on the blade/s, along with blade spacers and an arbor nut so that they can be stacked and the users don't need to dial in the spacing between blades (each operation might have a different size requirement).

Oh great a beeman!
Now we will never get to talk or hear about anything but bees!
I can't imagine you'll have time for anything but your bees so maybe you should just buzz along.

😛JUST KIDDING OF COURSE!

I know bees (and ants) are fascinating creatures and all bee guys I've ever ran into are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about bees and are eager to share that with me.

Welcome to the forum. Not only is this a great metal working hobby forum it's also a great place to learn about all sorts of stuff you didnt come here for....including bees. It just so happens that we all share the common interest of metal working of some sort or another.

Welcome aboard.
We're getting two hives on our property this Fall. Quite excited about it!
Shoot some pics of the item your making 🙂

Welcome from Ontario. I was born a Saskatchewan farmboy, worked as an engineer in the auto industry for 35 years, then retired back to farming in Ontario for the last 15. Machining is a required part of repairing farm equipment. But I also have a keen interest in gunsmithing. We have 2 wild honeybee hives on our farm and one of them swarmed this spring. After a crazy search, I found a local beekeeper who rescued them. He said he would bring them back but that hasn't happened yet...... I may have to resort to saving a swarm next spring myself.

Seems there are quite a few bee lovers who like machining too.....
