So I have the typical 4x6 busybee bandsaw so many of us have and the brass gear has pretty worn all the teeth off. I've never cut a gear before but figured I would try. I would first turn a worm from 4140 to the same dimensions as my bandsaw worm. I would then cut 4 or 6 reliefs in it and then harden it. I would then toss the worm back into my lathe and then my gear blank onto a thrust bearing/rotating mount in my toolpost and slowly feed the gear blank into the spinning worm and watch as it gleefully spins away forming a perfectly viable and usable gear.
Any issues or advice, or am I on crack and should I just fork over the $80 for a new gear off Amazon and hope it fits?
