  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

I got an ER32 flat chuck off Amazon and I want to make a backplate for it. What I need to know is does anyone know what the spindle thread is on the standard modern 9 ultilathe? Do you guys think I can use aluminum or does it have to be medal? I do have a piece of cast iron that might work, old weirder plate weight. Or should I try to find some other cast iron to use?
The collet plate.

Perhaps a commercial one can be adapted? 1-1/2 X 8 is pretty common, for example Little Machine Shop has 6 inch and 4 versions:

One thing to consider is that the spindle register on a SM may have a smaller diameter than a Southbend. I found this when I traded chucks with @YYCHM. My Chuck wouldn’t spin all the way on my SB but fit his SM.

I've got a South Bend 4J, if you want to trade the PRATT 4J back.
