Anyone have broken carbide drill bits?

I bought a fancy drill doctor, I want to try my hand at sharpening carbide on it. Though I know it's not really the right way to go about it, I am still looking for donor drill bits to learn, practice and experiment.

Let me know!

By 'fancy' which model do you have? I have the basic DD but have not done carbide, only HSS. I find it to be so-so. It corrects the geometry OK & puts a not bad finish on, But IMO a far cry from the polished look of a nicely ground drill, especially carbide. Maybe I need to investigate a higher grit diamond wheel replacement (assuming they make one). But just eyeballing the finish on HSS bit from my 6" bench grinder using a good stone wheel, it seems more refined finish. I almost wish the DD used little cup stones vs. the diamond coated cartridge, but then you'd have to have dressing provisions & its looking more like a tool & cutter grinder.

Let us know how you make out.

their top model the 750X

Was actually a gift awhile ago, just getting around to using it now.

They make a fine wheel, 180 grit, which would be more in line with Carbide, smoother would be better though.

Yup, same as mine. Sheesh maybe I have the 100x wheel installed, I should check. I recall I had some bad offshore bits I tuned up & maybe why the coarser wheel. The geometry & edges were brutal. The first 20 rotations of indexer sounded like ZZZZT...then silence on the other half. When it finally goes ZZZT-ZZZT then you know its becoming symmetric again.
