And so it begins..

The new love of my life, I've decided to call her Lana.

Once i got her home and unloaded, I just had to start giving her a nice bath, cleaning the ways before i moved the apron

On first viewing I noticed the tool post was separated.
I went to fit the tool post back on, rhe mounting stud was loose so i decided to take off the compound and cross slide casting.
All looked very good, like new, I cleaned, greased with some white food grade EP and re assembled.
I went to put on the compound and discovered it wouldnt move freely seemed to dig in when tightening clamping screws. So i took it apart and quickly realized the screws were too long and dug into the bottom casting.
I took a pencil grinder with a tiny end cutter and cleaned up the gouges, ground the end of the screws and decided to make 2 tiny washers to raise the screws up a bit.
I like that better anyways because the screw sits on a washer, not the casting who's hole is slightly tapered from drilling.
I greased the compound put the washers and screws and now it tightens beautifully with little effort

Really nice. Keep us posted and add some pics when Lana makes some chips.
I see you are a new member. Welcome aboard. Posting the new lathe is a great intro.
Where does Lana live?

Next step, the tool post.
Some of the tool securing screws were mashed from overtightening, again I got the pencil grinder out and carefully removed the mangled end so I could remove without damaging threads. A quick trip to the fine wheel on the bench grinder some white grease and back together.
The detent ball was gone. Thank god I had a spare one. For some reason the toolpost does not sit square to the compound. Upon inspection the detent slots are milled slightly off center. As a result the tool post sits a few degrees off.
Does anyone know why this is?

Now, onto the tailstock

I was checking it out, and the handwheel was going in and out a half inch. Sonething obviously wrong , I disasembled and discovered a pin that was sheared, it must have broken and somone filed it off.
I carefully drilled it out and took a pc. Of 3/16 stainless roundand fit it in.
It was a bit loose so I tapped it endwise on the anvil and fattened it out a bit, raduis the end and it all fit back together with a bit of grease, nice and snug now.

The thin washer under the pull up bolt deformed, so replaced that with a thicker one, adjusted the nut.
The 2 levers and hand crank were all loose, a bit of blue locktite, sone final cleaning and the tailstock good to go. Later when the machine is running I'll check the lateral adjustment

It should be adjusted such that it will ALMOST go over center when tightened, but not quite. Too tight and it won't tighten properly, too loose and it will go overcenter and you lose its functionality.

Just get rid of it. That stupid detent ball is just a pain in the Butt. You don't need it once you know what you are doing, so why fight with it?
Further, even if they 'look' square, they aren't square enough ;)

Cool lathe. i like Lana. V on both sides of the bed. Two head stock oil sight glass, for leveling the lathe, lol What is the chart on the threading dial. All manageable fixes. I think she is in good hands now. She is finally getting some TLC .

Sus,
I really liked the detent on the Voest I had, it was slick. It wasnt a ball, it was an angled pin, very positive indexing.
I may re-drill the compound casting and change it to a pin in the future.
I may add a second heavy washer on the tailstock bolt add a jam nut and adjust it perfect like u say

Fixer,
Thank you :)
Lana is becoming my mistress...
I think my wife might come to dislike her :(
There is no oil in the machine at all.
I put WD 40 at moving points to make things move good during this tune up process. Before start up ill make sure all the right lubes are where they need to be. Not had a good look at the chart yet, its probably the thread pitch for the dial.
I'm noticing some common features like the Voest had. Though made in Taiwan 40 yrs ago, I think think its pretty decent quality, better than a lot of the mainland chineese crap thats sold today.

Heres a better view od the ways, they are almost pristine. I stoned off a few micro knicks near the chuck

So you didn’t say where you and Lana live. If southern Ontario it would be great if you were able to meet some members at the meetup.

In a different thread, he mentioned Osoyoos BC.
