3DP pens

Funny I saw a post today somewhere by a mom wanting to buy her kids a 3D printer because they had out grown their 3D pens.

I bought a couple in the last few years, mostly as you say they are cheap the first one the switch went wonky after months but the second has been good. My daughter mostly used it for adding to something already made/creating. I did try to weld some things together with success but the temp had to be way up with a lower flow to get a decent bond which made it slow a slow process for anything bigger than tacking together. It is good for using up those last bits of filament.
A million years ago when I was a lad I received a spin welder kit for xmas you spun these plastic welding rods and built the frame of a race car out of it, the kicker the spinner after building it was used to propel it genius!

I have a cheap one of Amazon. Most I’ve used it for was to add different colour accents to stuff. Like white eyes on a small figure. Have not used it for years after figuring out how to slice and pause at height for colour changes.

Never used the for gluing. I use plastic epoxy for out door stuff and cyano glue for everything else. Now I try to make the parts lock together or use printed pins, even large threads.

My Son got one for Christmas. Pretty neat, limited uses though, But not terribly expensive if you want to pick one up and play around with it for various duties to see if it'll work how you want. I was kinda hoping I could use it to repair 3d prints for patterns, or build up features on existing prints to shape and sculpt but I struggled with adhesion problems. https://canadianhobbymetalworkers.com/threads/3d-printer-pens.13488/#post-179817

He still plays around with it periodically. It works pretty good tracing out a shape on a flat surface and then building it up in 3d. The material sticks to itself pretty good, I just couldn't get it to stick to older prints, and have not played with it much more since the initial tests.
