    Lost foam aluminium casting issues

I have done a couple. Some came out trash and others very good. I used drywall compound which is a bit messy and took longer to dry than I expected. I often wondered about a hybrid where I would pack the foam casting in green sand but I have not tried it. Brian

    CBN Wheels

How well do they work on regular high carbon steel like chisels? I gather that they can get contaminated on mild steel. How low can the carbon go before it is an issue? Brian

Dan Gelbart posts unusual shop tricks

I do have a couple of humidity meters but don't find them very accurate. (two meters often disagree and take turns on which one is higher). I try to aim for a humidity of around 50%. Dan recommends lower but I haven't had a problem at this level. Makes for an expensive heater but the...

Dan Gelbart posts unusual shop tricks

My problem with dehumidifiers is finding one that will work in an unheated space. Even the ones rated for below 40 degrees F are painfully slow at those temperatures. Can anybody recommend a brand / model they have had good success with? I find mine runs just about 24X7 and doesn't remove...

    Casting sand

When I first got the clay I was very hopeful that it would be suitable for oil bonded sand as the loading dock guy referred to it as petrobond but I am pretty sure it is not. I have run the tests you linked and it does not act at all like either form of bentonite. My best guess at the moment...

    2x72 grinder discussion

Re: I might give my local laser cutting service a go for this. If you go ahead, can you let us know what the quote comes out to? I probably have enough steel in the junk box and I have a band saw but I like the idea of the precision slots for alignment and I don't like the idea of that much...

    2x72 grinder discussion

Not to take the discussion on a left turn but I really like some of the ideas in this build: I have a small shop and am always on the lookout for small and portable solutions. His hinge design is inspired and definitely thinking outside the box. He is using much lighter material which would...

    Mercury

one other thought / anecdote..... In the late 90's I was camping on the banks of the Fraser River near Hope. Got woke up by the sound of a gas motor. Went down to the river to find an older guy (probably younger than me now) shoveling sand into a sluice and a gas pump adding the water. Turns...

    Mercury

Like most here, I played with the stuff as a child (the dentist used to pour a bit in your hand to play with). I had a couple of pounds I was hoarding for some future project when I started to get nervous about the degree of hysteria society is moving to. I ended up taking mine up to the local...
