Tips/Techniques Hand fitting for an interference fit?

Loctite sets up much quicker with heat. On a long section that's been heated up, you might find that the shaft moves in well half way, and then the loctite sets up and you're stuck. (Been there done that, won't do it again!!)

    4-Jaw Buck Chuck

Well, I did a little surfing last night, and on the Kitagawa site the have torque specs: Since I'm using 1/2"-13, the 12mm is closest, so I torqued the bolts to 80ft-lbs. Cleaning up the jaws, lightly lubed and installed. All done.

    4-Jaw Buck Chuck

This past Monday, I finally received the backplate. Ordered from MSC, 6" (6.375"OD), made by Gator Chucks. Not sure where it's made but it's nice. After taking all the pertinent measurements, I decided to drill and tap for the 4 bolts that hold the chuck on. Then I had to measure the...

    Boring Bars

I have a number of different sized insert boring bars from 1/4" to 1". Many with carbide shafts. I tend to do a lot of small diameter deep holes. The larger bars are held directly in the QCTP holders. The smaller ones are held with tool holders or collet chucks. A number of years ago I...

    Adapting a boring head

Yeah, the 40 taper is real nice. I use an ER40 collet chuck for the majority of my milling. But when I want to do some roughhousing like facemilling or endmill roughing, or using the boring head, I take the collet chuck off and use those tools with #40 taper. I also made a wooden spindle...

    Adapting a boring head

That's odd that it had a pull stud inserted into that. Here is a photo of the two styles, CAT40 on the left; NMTB40 on the right. Also, from Chaski.org: A 40 taper is standard all the way thru. What differs is the total length, the collars and driving slots and the draw bar threads and...

    Adapting a boring head

Nice job. I'm coveting your facing/boring head! I think that adapter is NMTB40, not CAT40. Taper is the same, but CAT40 has a removable pull stud.

How to get the index ring back onto the hand wheel?

What a pain!! My thoughts: A section of spring steel the width of the diameter of the balls. The length, 1/4" shorter than the circumference. Up turn the ends. Bend the steel band to go around the shaft tightly. So now when you put the band on the shaft, there's 1/2" space. Put spring and...
