    Telescope secondary mirror support system

Today I spent some time cutting out a 2” disk out of a .125” thick piece of Kovar plate. Kovar and Borosilicate glass have fairly similar CTEs. Chucked in 4J and used a trepanning tool to cut it out. Now I have to drill some holes. Pierre

    Wash rag hanger

Bought a new kitchen tap a few months ago. The arm that holds the spray head is very convenient for holding the wash rag, but it is not as convenient when the rag is hanging there. So today I modeled a clamp and tube to be the hanger. The clamp wraps around the faucet arm and the tube which is...

Tips/Techniques Starrett 230 roller lock adjustment

My micrometer was getting stiff and it came down to the roller lock. So, I removed the lock using a small jeweler’s screw driver. It is made of 3 pieces. The tiny pin and the split ring is the lock. The ring was closed with no gap. I opened the gap a bit. The little pin was measured...

Tool Palmgren milling attachment knob modified

Had this vise for years and it is been a pain in cranking the vice up and down. Removed the threaded shaft that is pinned to the knob, drilled and tapped the top for a bolt, pinned it and return to the vice. Now I can use a wrench or whatever without breaking my wrist. It is the simple things...

Grinder for removing swelling on hot rolls

This has been idling for a very long long time. Rolling mill rolls are ground flat but when heated they expand but not equally across the working length, as the heaters are usually in the center and the end which are near the oil cooled bearings are naturally cooler. So naturally the material...

Updating one of our rolling mills

The last two days I have been changing out the chocks and rolls for properly designed version. The original was set up for grease and they were converted to recirculating oil. The oil was not moving all around and this caused poor seal life. The rolls are heated to 538F and occasionally 640F...

    Part of our ride today

We took part of the South Coast Dream Drive that covers Hwy 3 between Fort Erie and St Thomas Ontario. We tied this together with an extension to Highgate. There is an old service station set up as of decades ago. Parked our car at one of the pumps. Unfortunately due to the sun direction, sun in...

B&S Challenger Surface Grinder needed a repair

We have the above unit 6X12 size. Likely many decades old. Anyway recently I replaced the oiler that had stopped working. Naturally as soon as I did that, all the ways are being lubed again! New complaint! The head drops after the operator stops lowering it down. Oil makes things slide! Ruins...

Spotted a bunch of old cars last weekend.

Last weekend I was traveling to Ottawa via Hwy7 and while stopped at Maramora, a caravan of flatbed tow trucks passed me by. Loaded with vintage cars! Later I saw they were at the McDonalds at the intersection of Hwy7 and 62. Naturally I stopped and took photos. Just yesterday the OPP did a...
