  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Help me make my lathe better

My old McDougall lathe has an old school thread on chucks. With a floating threaded collar to hold it to the tapered spindle with a key. The chuck has a lot of run out, and the jaws are worn, not straight. I’d like to fit a new chuck on, luckily the millwright I bought the machine from had a...

Finally a post not of disaster!

YES! Nothing broke or blew up! I figured out the threading on my lathe! I never noticed this rod that moves with the metic/inch selector behind the “stud gear” Then I realized it’s some sort of stopping rod so you can’t engage the metric clutch if something is there. Realized that nothing...

Well I really messed up this time.

Starting to wonder if this machining thing is for me, or maybe just this lathe is cursed. Now that I’d gone through everything I had a part I want to make with single point threading, now’s the time to learn. Set all my gears and settings for 14tpi, ran a scratch pass and got half that...

Now I’m sure I have angered the machining gods.

I think all my rednecking “good enough” projects has angered the gods! Saddle of the lathe back together. Used it for a minute and it was making an odd noise. Checked to make sure the oil pump was working, noticed the shop made coupler between the stock shaft and the shop fitted replacement...

Well I guess I’ll be taking my lathe saddle apart now.

Seems like I can’t win these days! Been such a busy year, I haven’t even been able to look at my last problem on the mill (electrical power feed) I had just finished a couple small parts for the last of my smoker build and thought I’d mess around with the feeds on the lathe as I hadn’t...

There’s a skunk in my shop!

Damnit! It’s threatening the bridge port!! To arms!

    Power feed circuit board blew

I was setting up cut in aluminum abs engaged the power feed not realizing how fast it was set to. I stopped it as quick as I could, but it shut off as I was throwing the switch. The built in circuit breaker didn’t trip, nor did the branch circuit breaker. I opened it up to find a small...

    I learned something today

If your going to drain the oil out of your lathe with an unknown capacity I would recommend not just letting it slowly -15 flow into a 12L container and not think to check on it over night. On an completely unrelated note I am doing product testing on “greasweep” natures super absorber. I’ve...

How bad of an idea is it to cut structure out of my lathe base?

I’m prefacing this as a bad, or st the very least not a great idea. I’ve finally got a motor to install in my lathe that came without one. tobarapprentice graciously provided me with a 3hp motor he had and I thought it was perfect, it’s a bit of a beast, but so is my lathe, it fits in the...

    Little motor wiring help

I’ve finally got a motor for my lathe graciously provided by fantastic forum member tobarapprentice. I had a motor reversing switch in my collection of things I was planing to use. Issue is the motor wining tags are all colours and the switch is what I thought was the standard...
