  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Shop New to me equipment coming.

So I wrestled a piece of roughly 8 1/4” mystery alloy (suspect 4140 or similar ‘tough’ steel into the saw tonight. With a light feed, it still cut through it in 18 minutes. Considering I have almost 20’ of this stuff and uses for steel this size, and the saw doesn’t struggle with it at all, I’m...

    Tool How to drive taps

Thought I’d add a comment here. I learned something new this last few days, that ER40 collets can be found in tap sizes, with the square drive built in as well. The ones I found only went up to 1” tap size, but even that I found interesting.

Tips/Techniques Vertical up welds & Can a Toaster Oven be used as a 7018 Rod Oven?

I used to spread a handful of 7018 across the top of my woodstove when I had one, it was my rod oven through the colder months for home use. As long as it’s over 100C for a stretch, it will remove most/all of the moisture. Is it correct? Nope. Effective and cheap.

    Another threading question

Playing catchup on the forum, so after reading the first few posts I skimmed the rest, and see you got a fit. In your original picture, just visually looking I knew you had to go deeper, as the with of the ‘groove’ was much smaller than the flat or what will become crest of the thread. Most...

Surface plate resurfacing/reconditioning/certification event SW Ontario Region

Not sure if the Montreal company is the same people, as we used when I worked in Peterborough or not. We had two guys from Montreal that would come do it, they travelled together in a car, and would spend a few days in town doing all of our plates. If it’s the same folks, I had the impression...

    Check my thinking please!

It’s similar to machining IHC or chrome plated materials. That first cut ideally is such that you get ‘under’ the outer skin. In a pinch some grinding to get rid of the bulk of the hard stuff first may be easier if you have a small/light machine to do this with.
