    Best place for gas?

Curious what size of cylinders you have. I bought small B tanks originally through BOC, (later become Linde, currently Meser), and have been anal about keeping all the documentation, but, when I go for an exchange, they don't seem to look at the cylinder that carefully, and the business is just...

    First lathe crash

Wow, that sucks, especially given the front was barely lifted and the back was firmly planted on solid level terra firma. If I ever upgrade to a bigger lathe, the careful factor just jumped from a 10 to an 11.

Shop Is your shop messy or spotless?

Mine is reasonably organized with lots of room to do metal and wood working projects. While some might pigeon hole a new machine acquisition into a spot, for me, If a new tool comes into the shop, something less useful has to leave. But I wish the shop were much better. Too many tools hanging...

    Precision Mathews TL Lathe

From a quote I received late March 2022, it was $8,900, pick up available in Newmarket-Ont, or else shipping is extra.

    Tool Your First Power Tool?

Funny - as this was also my first power tool. I still have it, and still use it. Just after that purchase, I bought a lot of Craftsman power tools, all were top of the line, touted as extra heavy duty, and most performed poorly and pretty much died shortly after the warranty period. They were...

What do we do with our metal working tools

I worked at a place that made a lot of combustible product, and were pretty anal about hot work permits for cutting , soldering or welding. Key points were; moving combustibles away if possible, having extinguishers or hoses on hand and ready, fire watch up to one hour after hot work, then spot...

Shop I’ll never complain about shop space again..

Smart creative people can get by quite nicely in a small area, and the workflow is probably more efficient. I worked with a fellow who did wood working in a basement utility room, maybe 12 x 12 in size, which also contained the furnace and hot water tank, and he was producing dining room sets...

    Black Oxide Comparison

I restored an older wood working vise, and to make the new fasteners look more "period correct", I heated them up with a propane torch, then dipped them in a heavy oil. The vice itself was heated the same way, and wiped with boiled linseed oil, but beware that this process gives off some nasty...

    Product Leaking Parts Washer

I believe the PA pumps are rated for water based solvents. My pw pump quit after 15 years of use. I bought a petroleum solvent rated pump through our local Wolseley dealer, Little Giant brand. It was pricey.
