  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Finished Basement - Big 2023 Project

Yeah, so, uh, 8 months later and it's done: Now mind you, permits have been closed since June, but all the finishing touches took a bit :)

Shop Garage Hoist - How it's going to kill me?

As mentioned in the thread, I have an engine hoist...so anything actually heavy will get picked with that (how I lifted my lathe/mill/car lift/air compressor/etc.). I can swap out for longer lags easily enough (and have some 4" ones on hand, maybe even some 5", I'd have to check) but my concern...

Shop Garage Hoist - How it's going to kill me?

Thanks for commenting! I'm aware of that Hyatt Regency thing, how walkways were supporting the loads below them when that was not the original intent of the engineered design. Yup, there is risk with the way I lagged things in, have been aware of that from the start of this project, and part...

Shop Garage Hoist - How it's going to kill me?

Yup, was aware of these brackets....would have had to figure out how to get threaded rod hanging down from the ceiling first before putting this up, it's the only way that style bracket will work. That's why I just welded on my own so I could bolt from either side, and it had the advantage of...

Shop Garage Hoist - How it's going to kill me?

I have a 660lb version of something like that, didn't even cross my mind to use it while lifting the welding cart....will have to try that at some point :)

    Circuit breaker tracer

I have the Fluke BK120 and once you understand how it works (swiping up and down the panel slowly), it's pretty well spot on accurate. I tried the Extech one a while ago and it was nowhere near as good and got returned. If you're going to buy one, just get the Fluke and don't waste your time on...

LoL so that's where you draw the line on structural support? If wife is involved, doesn't matter if it will fail ... because ... maybe it will ... ? lol She goes to a place dedicated to it with properly rigged stuff, she doesn't really do anything related at home, but it's crazy to see the...

Shop Garage Hoist - How it's going to kill me?

Yup, very fair...as said before, lifting 880lb limit of the hoist and pushing it? Not a chance I'd attempt that and I have an engine hoist for the heavy lifts. Lifting 200-300lbs? Yeah, I am comfortable with that sort of load and that's all it will ever see in my use and would be removed if I...

Shop Garage Hoist - How it's going to kill me?

Not a terrible idea...I did put cross bolts at the end to prevent the trolleys from leaving the track, they provide some spread resistance in those locations, but I could probably fairly easily weld on a couple gussets mid span without taking the entire thing down, the whip on my welder would...

Shop Garage Hoist - How it's going to kill me?

The pull out strength per lag should be ~400-500lbs per the tables I'm seeing, so my limitation is more likely the 2x6's yes. I don't have access above, so there weren't many other options for attachment without making a lot of holes in the drywall. The holes are ~4 inches apart on each plate...
