  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Machine Not sure I need a drill press anymore

I was drilling & tapping a bunch of parts on the mill the other day. I had finished setting up the tapping head when I discovered that I had missed 2 parts in the counter-sinking step. Took the parts and counter-sink out to the DP and quickly solved the problem. Granted that a floor standing DP...

    Tips/Techniques welding cast!!

The only way to know is to try. Ask 20 weldors how to weld cast iron and you will get 100 different answers. There are just too many different types of cast, and no way to identify what you have. As mentioned, try running a bead somewhere on the part in question and see if it sticks. Regarding...

CoreXY printer on the cheap end that seems to work, but not quite prime time...

I'm absolutely thrilled with my Bambu X1-C, it has truly been plug and play. I've had one problem with filament, and it was the carbon fiber PLA, which the software warns me about each time I use it. The only printing problem I've had was with a downloaded dessicant bottle. The author oriented...

    Identifying an odd thread.

Perhaps it was your measurment rather than your math, .787 is almost exactly 20mm.

    Identifying an odd thread.

Your math is a little off, it's 20mm OD. M20 x 1.25 taps and dies are readily available.

    Tips/Techniques welding cast!!

I've had surprisingly good luck welding cast with 309L stainless filler, both TIG and stick. I also use it when welding alloy steels. Basically, if the welds are cracking, use stainless filler. The low carbon content and (oddly) higher ductility make it quite forgiving.

When the machining doesn't go according to plan...

When I make a "major" mistake, I walk away. I need time to cool off and think about it before I attempt to correct/recover. Many times, while l lie awake in the middle of the night, the solution comes to me, and what had been a crisis becomes a minor detour.

Tips/Techniques Workshop Organization- things that have made a difference for you

Aside from clearing the front steps, it has to be over a foot before I consider the shovel or the plow. The shovel doesn't see much use. I've discovered that, if you just leave it alone, the snow will eventually melt. People are just so impatient. The path from the house to the shop just gets...

    Mercury

It was my first primary high-explosive, had to steal my dad's vodka to make it. He was relieved when he found out I wasn't drinking it.
