  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Machine B&S Challenger Surface Grinder - dust collector hookup

Personally, I like having a contactor cut the power to the VFD so usually do latching on/off buttons (not always, but lately I have been on every one). I don't believe the cheap VFD I've been buying are UL or CSA, and if they say they are its because someone told them to put it on the package...

    Royal Live Centre Bearing Replacement

I have had the same discussions with two engineers at two different bearing companies. The ones they pull to grade say P4 are occasionally tossed back in the barrel because they don't meet the spec, but both said that is increasingly rare. The high price is the labour to inspect and report...

New to me Ammco 7" Metal shaper

There is truth to that. The collector part of me wants everything in the catalogue, but the practical part knows most will never be used. Still, we want to avoid travesty .... a dusty box sitting there of every accessories but it's behind the furnace and we miss it :)

    Mill Spindle Cleanup

That is a mess, and it doesn't look hardened? That doesn't seem right, but if hardened I wouldn't think it would score like that. One thing you can do is, with the machine back together, using a sine bar, set the head very accurately to the taper angle. With a point in one of those pencil...

    CA-ON Large copper tubes?

Larger plumbing suppliers have it for commercial contractors but dollars to donuts you'll have to take a length of it. Grainder is $1239 for a 10' length  Sheet copper is easier to find, there are a few non ferrous metal services around. Try Peckovers and ASA alloys for a quote, and I...

Tips/Techniques Drill/Grind small hole in very hard steel

Some friend. lol. Mystery metal? I'm guessing that as if it was some needed alloy for design he would told you what was, right? If so ....my first thought is a design change - asking him to provide something than can drilled, and maybe so new cutters :). I found the graph below which is...

    Standard Modern 12x30

Excellent points, 100% agree A lathe is a big project ... imo you have at some point decide to go for it, or not, but its hard to ease into/work up to. There's not really the minors for machine tool reconditioning .

    Standard Modern 12x30

I believe they do. While they might bill it as low friction (who cares what the friction is, its fairly low already with cast iron and oil?) I think they use it because it's low cost and it is more likely to lead to more rapid wear of the ways because of embedding - like sometimes you think...

    Standard Modern 12x30

Agreed, but turcite still has to be scraped in (Moglice otoh doesn't). Personally I'm not a fan of these as a home shop approach. They make make sense as a less expensive method to get more life out of a machine in a commercial setting, but what happens is crap gets embedded in it instead of...
