  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    You are quite right about the range of grades of carbide. We need to remember that carbide is really just a bunch of dust particles that are compressed together under heat and pressure, so depending on what particulate you have in the mix, you will get very different results!

    Answering the question about whether or not to mix materials that you are cutting with a blade is an interesting one. The answer is yes... and no! So this choice really depends on the characteristics of the material you are cutting and how important contamination is in your application...

    Choosing TPI can be a little challenging, especially if you cut a wide range of materials and thicknesses. For the smaller 4"x 6" Horizontal/Vertical machines, the 10/14 pitch is usually a pretty good choice. It is far better to have the blade a little too fine when cutting the thicker stuff...

    Yes, we do make our Carbide End Mills in Winnipeg... and I'll let you in on a little secret... Importing raw carbide into Canada has far lower duties than bringing them into the USA, so a similar quality mill typically costs less from a Canadian manufacturer than a USA manufacturer!
