    King 1440 Lathe Speed plate

Just heard from @mickeyf, the guy who gave me the lathe, that it has a 3ph motor with it now. So I’ll have to give some thought to what I am going to do with it as far as power. Best solution would likely be VFD. (what he was going to do) I do like how much easier that would be. But I also like...

    King 1440 Re-assembly

The threads are sharp, and since that's the steel part of the mechanism, I'm assuming the bronze-ee (ish?) part is also worn. Of course! That makes sense. With the hint you gave I went back and took another look. It took a moment to click: the thing that was tripping me up wa the fact that...

    King 1440 Re-assembly

I got a bunch of parts on the lathe today! I'll send pictures tomorrow. Working on the saddle, cross slide and compound. Can someone tell me what this part is for?(The one circled in red). The parts list gives the very helpful label of "bolt". The way it shows the orientation in the...

Good start. Small steps every day. Hopefully, just not today as I help my daughter and her boyfriend do their taxes and stain boards for the gazebo

    King 1440 Lathe Speed plate

Never thought about that. I bet acetone will take the paint of like nothing. Once I find the rest of the plates, I'll send you the information. Hopefully before I head out east for a month the middle of May. And span and spindle does give you spandle, so you must be right!

    King 1440 Lathe Speed plate

Those look amazing! Couple of options: would it be possible to use the original plate for the engraving? Then I don't need new material. (it's 19.8 x 21 cm) If not, I measured the area taken up by the speed chart. It's 15 cm wide and 9 cm high. I could then just glue it over the old...

    King 1440 Re-assembly

Taking a bit of a break from the shop and backyard projects to start this thread. So I promised some pictures. This is a King 1440 I picked up. It was taken apart several years ago, and sat in my garage form the last year as other projects kept pushing it to the bottom of the heap. Here's...
