Noob needs help with custom HSS tool.

I'm glad to hear it! I'm also a fan of Blondihacks. Useful resource and entertaining. To sharpen carbide you need a special grinding wheel. I don't remember what they're made of off hand, but I always think of mine just as "The Green Wheel".

    Where to start...

I'll add another hat to the 9-10" swing lathe pile. It's a good compromise if you don't know exactly what you need/will do, while still having good capabilities and not being too massive. I'm starting to outgrow my 10x36 lathe, but have gotten lots of good work out of it and will continue to...

    1 1/2 - 8 TPI jacobs chuck

I've got one on my Atlas 10F. It was super handy before I got a drill press, but sees much less use now. I still use it every once in a while.

Agreed on both points. I was trying to speak generally, not to be rigorously correct, although to your point about deeper cuts, that is less relevant in the context of an Atlas 618. I haven't used one of them myself, but I would expect rigidity and power to come at a premium with a small lathe...

Noob needs help with custom HSS tool.

I recently ground a turning tool as Mikey describes in post #104 (page 11). I would definitely recommend it. I had to turn down some 4140 from 2" down to 1 5/8" across a 17" length. I was doing about 0.075" DoC with my Atlas 10" and it worked very nicely for roughing. You can get some really...

Myford ML7 Resurrection - A New Summer Project

I think I've decided what I'm going to do about the bearings. I'm going to go with a similar modification to the spindle to the one by Wolfgang in the link I posted earlier (see below). Since I knew that the bearings were previously replaced, I wanted to disassemble the spindle so I could take...

Myford ML7 Resurrection - A New Summer Project

I've heard the MEM conversion mentioned in a couple places, but haven't had tracked the issues down for myself. The "guide" that I'd be following if I go down that route was posed by a gentleman named Wolfgang Huperz to the myford lathes group. It's an interesting read, even if you don't have...

Myford ML7 Resurrection - A New Summer Project

I'm sure that's how it is supposed to be. What I did was some shallow dimples with a center drill that I later had to enlarge with a dremel to keep the gib from sliding out when the crossslide moved. My main issue was that I didn't have an end mill small enough to make proper angled flats. I...

Myford ML7 Resurrection - A New Summer Project

Finished up the gib today. I think I'm going to have to mess with the dimples in the gib. As is, I have it properly tight and moving freely for the most part, but if I move it around enough it will bind and I think that is because the gib is moving relative to the gib screws which wedge it...
