  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Tips/Techniques Feedback on Brazing techniques and results

Too much heat can definitely cause bubbles, especially the smaller pinhole type ones. One tell tale sign of overheating is areas of the filler appearing more copper coloured. I think that’s more than good enough though. I’ve done several dropout swaps and repairs on old frames where there was...

I use a 17 since I do aluminum too and need the extra amperage range. Flex neck is ideal, same with pulse but you could manage without. A gas lens to get extra stick out is pretty important on some joints where you need access. @Xyphota what pulse settings do you use? I only recently got the...

Looks good! If you didn’t keyhole any joints on your first frame that’s a big win.

You can still use old school single butted seattubes, just have to add a sleeve. I’ve done it a few times to use up tubes that I have on hand. 1-1/4 .058” wall sleeved over the top or turned down slightly to save a little weight.

Right now Nova Cycle supply is liquidating, 60% off all stock. Looks like the remaining stuff is limited but still some useful stuff. I got a couple sets of aluminum tubes for like $70/set a couple weeks ago. Marinoni in Montreal used to sell from their stock, anyone could call them up and get...

I hold the torch at a bit more of an angle as well. I also have the flame a lot less aggressive. I warm the whole area carefully until the flux has all dried then I direct heat at the boss until it’s starting to go a slightly dull red. Introduce filler and then check if it went all the way...

Metal working - dry / lubricants / coatings / cooling mist

Yeah I don’t typically do that. If I’m using the mister it’s running for the whole cut. Spray bottle the same, slow squeezes of the trigger to keep a steadyish stream going. Directed more at the part than the cutter. The bit that’s missing in my last post is I back it out if things are getting...

Tool Tooling up a milling machine

Accusize has some indexable boring bar sets, can’t tell you if they’re any good but they are imperial so will fit your 1/2” boring head. Mesa tool in the US has some interesting boring bars and boring head attachments, including a 1/2” shank fly cutting attachment. In my opinion for fly...

Tool Tooling up a milling machine

Maybe you already bought them but I looked up that boring bar set since I’ve been after something like that. The flats on the shanks are the wrong orientation for any boring head I’ve ever seen.

    Intro to welding course?

I did a fantastic TIG course at the Conestoga Guelph campus in I think 2018. No prequisite required, it was Wednesday nights 6-10pm I think for about 10-12 weeks. Covered steel and aluminum.
