  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Hendey T&G Lathe

The bed is on the base! The bed got its top coat on Thursday evening and it’s been baking in the sun since then. I lifted it up to pull out all the plastic sheeting to land it properly and bolt it down. I need a break from the sun now but I’d like to do a blue check with the headstock...

    Lathe VFD?

Interesting my situation was 2hp motor and 2hp vfd. I assumed going up to a 3hp VFD would solve it but sold the lathe before that happened.

    Lathe VFD?

I had this same problem with a cheap VFD on a gearhead lathe. Changing to slower acceleration in the settings solved the problem. Best I can tell the cheap VFDs are a bit under rated and spikes in current can trip them. Had the same issue taking heavy cuts but couldn’t do anything about that...

Clearpath Servo Control, Manual Lathe Spindle.

That’s the same size and power as mine but with step and direction capability. If you want a simple control look at the manual velocity control mode I mentioned above. No programming required just settings in the clearpath software and a switch and encoder. A potentiometer won’t work since...

Clearpath Servo Control, Manual Lathe Spindle.

I don’t think I’ll need encoder output from the motor for anything. Not planning an ELS or anything like that. For direction I’d like to just use a simple switch. Probably a switch with an LED for the enable/disable. For the PWM signal I’d just like a display so I can set it while the motor is...

Clearpath Servo Control, Manual Lathe Spindle.

So I stumbled upon a deal on a used clearpath servo motor. Model CPM-MCVC-N1433S-RLN. Going to go pick it up later this week. This motor will deliver 2.3hp continuous and 6.7hp peak running off single phase 230v power. Comes with a regenerative resistor unit as well for increased braking...

Rotary table...with a thread on chuck?

No it doesn’t have anything to stop it rotating. I would guess the sleeve is a press fit and I don’t think the intended purpose would need to resist much rotational force. It’s only a stub sleeve so there’s not much taper contact anyways. I believe it’s there to put a dead Center in for...

Rotary table...with a thread on chuck?

I have an 8” stm rotary table, mine came to me with the MT center sleeve already removed by a previous owner. What’s there is a plain bore that runs true to the rotation of the table (less than .001” TIR). I have been working on a plate that uses this bore to locate a chuck. It’s mostly done...

    turning in sub nanometres

Here’s a neat video on the Moore CMM that’s in use at NIST. This machine is kind of the gold standard for accuracy of measurement and can measure accurately down to 10nm. I imagine the 0.1nm on diamond turning lathes is the resolution of the system. The positional accuracy is probably...

Kira Drill Press with 1/2hp 90v dc motor and KB variable speed drive.

Yeah the head casting is noticeably heavier than a typical cheap drill press.
