  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Chasing some noise in the drive system now. Rhythmic thumping. It’s not present when I run the motor with the clutch disengaged and spindle not spinning. With the clutch engaged it’s present and louder/higher frequency as speed increases. Not sure if it’s coming from the spindle or the driven...

There’s some re-organizing and purging that will need to happen. I’ll be moving the mill a bit as well. I would like to rebuild the shop 16x20 or maybe a bit bigger in a few years too.

3ph motor back in with a new sturdier adapter for mounting. The frame size of the original DC motor was massive. I also machined a new sheave for my ideal speed range/power curve. Triple sheaves for A/4L belts (not A/B) don’t seem to be readily available. Ordered a better potentiometer with...

    $70million Lotto Max

Yup, I heard an analysis recently that said that it’s not that most lottery winners blow their money it’s just that those are the ones you hear about. Personally I can’t do it. Never bought one in my life. I can’t gamble either. Not sure how to explain it, it’s like my brain isn’t wired for it.

I figured out the servo issue before clearpath got back to me. The drive system has slop in it because of there’s a dog clutch in the countershaft assembly where you switch between high and low range speeds. I think this was tricking the servo into tuning itself incorrectly. I re-ran the auto...

Brown&Sharp No2 surface grinder any good?

Why not rewind to 240v? I’ve had it done twice, both for milling machines with unusual motors. Cost me ~$400 each time.

Yeah I’ll keep checking the ways with my level as I work through some other stuff. The clearpath AC servo is giving me some trouble at the moment. When I ran it uncoupled with default tuning (which is for an uncoupled motor) it was amazingly smooth and steady at a given rpm and ramping between...

    Dividing head restoration

How big is the key? One way is to drill through the key and tap threads. Thread in a bolt to act as a jacks screw. Might not work if it’s a really small key.

I levelled the lathe during the week. After getting it the first time I had to make adjustments for another couple days until it settled. Forgot to take pictures but I used my master level (VIS .0005/10” resolution) and 1-2-3 blocks on the flats and v blocks on the v ways. I measured very...

The bed rests on 4 levelling screws built in. They’re 7/8” or maybe 1” dog point set screws with locking nuts. Interestingly they are not all at the 4 corners of the base. The front tailstock side levelling screw is positioned about 6” back from the front of the base and the rear tailstock side...
