  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    SB9 reverse threading

I read through that thread and my 'take away' was that there wasn't anything workable (or safe) for my Logan. But food for thought, for sure. And a SouthBend spindle and chuck may be different from a Logan; the Myfords certainly are. Some folks leave the same chuck on the lathe for long periods...

    SB9 reverse threading

Spending more than a few minutes on the phone with somebody who might not even buy anything?....If it's like the local KMS here, there were probably 5-10 customers inside the store, walking around trying to find somebody to help them spend their money. I've "been there, done that" ..standing in...

    SB9 reverse threading

I think your expectations were a bit "optimistic", unless your local KMS store is radically different than the one in Victoria. The KMS I know (and don't love... :) ) is a place that sells mostly to local building tradespeople and home handymen. Cordless tools expertise: yup. Specs and details...

    Mistake

When I was cutting off dumbbell ends for later machining, I noticed that the shaft/handle was steel and the end iron weights were cast around the shaft. So there was a (harder) mystery steel rod part way through the end weight. YMMV - the dumbell I was using was older, origin unknown. A few...

    Mistake

That's what I did: I made a lead hammer for tapping the drawbar in my mini-mill. Wood molds work fine for pouring lead, and lead can be melted (outdoors) in a pot over a camping stove. I've also machined cast iron from dumbbells and old sad irons. Pouring lead is a lot easier. :)

    Angular contact bearings

Tom- If the squealing doesn't disappear when the spindle isn't moving, then I'd agree with your diagnosis that it's the driveshaft that's the problem. The change gear train is powered by the spindle, so that eliminates them as well. This is assuming that it's not the motor - you've run the motor...

    Angular contact bearings

I have done this bearing replacement on my 7x14 lathe- more 'for fun' than necessity. :) To remove and replace the bearings the tools that come with the gear set from Micromark work well; that's what I used. That set is on closeout...

    Tool CFM

BTW, if you buy name-brand spray equi;ment, you can always re-sell it after your project is done. My guess is that you will find other things to paint once you have the skill - and the leftovers. :) Re-paint the wheelbarrow to match the car, etc....

    Tool CFM

I agree. 2k paints are fantastic but a bit scary - and they can affect your eyes as well, apparently. HobbyAir is what I use - available from Aircraft Spruce Canada. If you are spraying in your garage (not a spray booth with good ventilation) a hood is better than a mask, even with the fresh...

    Tool CFM

It took me a while to learn this- it's the beginners (like me) that need the good quality tools. A pro can 'make do' if necessary, but I need all the help I can get. I started with a cheap gun and the results weren't good. (This was spraying guitars and then, some years later, kayaks - not...
