    Air compressor not restarting

I think it will be a 2 man job. One person observing the meter and the other making the compressor cycle on and off. What you should see at the meter before the thermal overload trips is enough "excess" current to heat up the bimetallic strip of the thermal overload before it bends and opens...

Yes - different meter setting for AC and DC. Some meters will only measure AC or DC. Some can measure both. Edit - I am referring to the "clamp style" only. Meter on left only measures AC amps. Meter on right can measure both AC and DC. It has 3 different settings for different ranges of...

The S.F. is 1.0 and the FLA is 17.2 so the thermal overload switch should open at approximately 17.2 x 1.15 = 19.78 amps. That's a rough guideline +/-. Not sure how long it would actually take to trip but the meter should show everything as it happens.

    Air compressor not restarting

Yes, if you see the current significantly higher than the rated FLA for an extended period of time and the thermal overload "trips" you know the switch is working properly. In the manual it suggests waiting 10-15 minutes for the motor to cool down before attempting a reset but you stated the...

Sanborn 60 gallon 240 volt shows a 3.7 HP motor according to Princess Auto website. Based on "typical" FLA ratings 17 amps sounds about right.

What size of motor? Do you have a picture of the nameplate available?
