  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Unusual tool post grinder

Ah, I see. My drywall cutout is older, with no skirt so the collet nut almost meets the front bearing housing -- no shaft stick out to speak of. Thanks for the tip. Edit: to correct stupid autocorrect

    Unusual tool post grinder

Ok this is terrific feedback (also, thanks David and Ironman). Not having done a lot of grinding at the lathe, I probably wouldn't catch this until later when I tried to do setup and ran into problems. According to google (practical machinist etc) these are legendary spindles for smooth...

CA-BC What kind of steel in CV half-shaft axles

I had the torches out recently on a different job so I decided to try a low-rent annealing on the same axles. Heated to non-magnetic and wrapped in fibreglass blanket for half a day. Was still warm when I got back to it BUT, still hard as all get out. It may have softened slightly, or maybe...

CA-BC What kind of steel in CV half-shaft axles

I had some junk half-shafts around and cut the axles out before scrapping the CV joints. Languished under the bench for a while but recently I had a fixture that I wanted to make from something other than HR mild steel. Whatever the axle part is made of does not like to be turned in my lathe...

Thanks for all the friendly responses, especially from the Vancouver/Victoria area. While I love the world-wide conversations that we can have these days using technology, sometimes I think that local connections are under-valued.

No worries. At the moment I'm only down one -- an EC-10. Naturally the next job comes along will need that one!
