    Speed/RPM/SFM Slide Rule

I’m in the process of converting my linear SFM slide rule into a circular slide rule like your calculator. The math to figure out the offset relation between the scales is making my head hurt, but I’m almost there. I’ll post some photos once I have a functioning prototype. Nice thing about...

Running Linux and which version in order to run WINE or some other WIN-7..WIN-10 option.

Virtual Box from Oracle is free, I’m currently using it to run XP, Win7-32bit, and Win10-64bit on a spare MacMini from 2012 (i5-3210). Each OS runs in its own virtual drive, and share a common Documents directory. A bit fiddly to set up, but works well. VB has Linux support, basically pick any...

    First crash

Parting off tubing on a lathe is a major PITA. It’s using a not very effective but very expensive tool instead of a $50 pipe cutter. Or a hacksaw. Either one is faster and easier than using a lathe. I confess that I often use my lathe to cut tubing, but: I use a rotating chuck in the tail stock...

    Shoulder check

Some day when I’m really brave I’m going to react to the driver behind me who honks when I take 0.5 seconds to start moving when the light changes. (Every motorcycle rider I know waits a second before scooting across the intersection.) My response (in my head) is: A decent income in Canada is...

Don't Use FedEx for Any International Shipments

It’s all math of large numbers. FedEx achieved $$88b revenue in 2024. Their customer base must be in the hundreds of million users. So pissing off a thousand users a week will have zero effect on revenue. https://www.statista.com/statistics/267501/revenue-of-fedex/ And don’t bother...

What size lathe do you have?

CX708/B2227L is the same as the BVB25 sold by a zillion Chinese suppliers. Realistic weight is 150 kgs, see https://ia601004.us.archive.org/34/items/lathe-manuals/BV20-%20BVB25%20manuel.pdf for a weight chart for the various versions. Busy Bee customer service is abysmal. Don’t expect a...
