  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Shop Flooring Materials

Agreed. But in my shop, they last a couple of years before I'm annoyed enough to replace them. Small, low HP machines and mostly work in aluminum or cast iron, so soft or fine swarf. YMMV. Used to work with an old-school machinist who used duck boards. Shop was in a shed at a low-end shipyard...

    Shop Flooring Materials

I'm really, really cheap. Crappy dollar store 24"x24" EVA foam floor tiles, in bright collars. Eighteen for $24 at Amazon. Soft enough to stand on for hours, hot chips melt in to them and stay there, easy to remove to vacuum up sawdust, and when they wear out I go buy new ones. Also good in the...

    Will this switch work?

Switch will work but not the way you have it wired. Capacitor goes to blue and black, connecting blue or black to line with the other wire open reverses the motor. Centre-Off SPDT or DPDT switch will work just fine. (Green isn't ground, but it's impossible to draw a white wire.

    Which Linux? Be Kind…

So after another dive into Linux, it looks like it doesn't add anything of value to my setup. I use an ancient drafting program called CadStd, originally bought it for Win95 and still use it. I know all its tricks and can draw my simple stuff very quickly. CadStd exports to DXF, Estlcam imports...

    Which Linux? Be Kind…

It’s relatively simple to run W11 on unsupported machines. I was running W10 but got tired of being pestered by Bill to upgrade, so went to W11 to get rid of the nagging. I accept that sometime in the next year or so Bill will refuse to send me security updates, since the new MS structure is 36...

    Which Linux? Be Kind…

Without starting a flame war, any suggestions on which Linux for a simple CNC router? Im not doing anything fancy, the occasional front panel for elx gear, a few 3d-ish plaques, some aluminum knick-knacks. I’m currently running a small CNC router using an Arduino controller and Estlcam, which...
