  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area.     Judging by Youtube videos I've watched there is very little wear and should not be an issue in a hobby shop. Commercial production shops might be another matter.

    Whats to discuss? Seems to me the consensus is split points are better unless you are tied to grinding by hand. All the more reason to get a machine like the model A that can do split points accurately and well.

    Ya, I totally get this point of view. But I feel I am between a rock and a hard place when it comes to this. These days most often there is either no affordable alternative or no alternative at all.

    Thats interesting! I've only ever had one other South Bend 9A and it had pretty thick shims under the head stock but this one didn't have any?!

    I finally got around to checking the accuracy of the bed on my small 9 inch South Bend lathe. I took advantage of the fact I currently have the lathe all in pieces to take the entire bed and put it upside down on my 3' surface plate so that I could check deviation in the bed with feeler gauges...
