  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Shop Inheritance Machining Episode

Based on what I've read/heard from others there are pros/cons. Anchoring the machine to a heavy base can reduce vibrations and improve quality of machining possible. On the other hand even concrete floors can crack and shift and if such shifting/cracks appear under an anchored machine the...

    DTI choice?

I've purchased several items from ITM in recent years and never had any problems, I do recall tho someone else posting recently who was having issues. I think they were questioning brand authenticity and problems with returns. It does seem to me that Mitutoyo has started to cut corners in...

Tool Help 300lb table crane - must be some mechanical engineers around here?

I would guess its a very bad idea. I think the Tele Pro design transfers the downward forces of the load to be directly over the vertical supporting post whereas your design leaves all the downward force of the load at the end of the horizontal member. Therefore in your design there would be...

I got this 15A DC motor speed controller from Princess Auto today for $3. I was wondering if I could use it to control a DC motor on my South Bend lathe? The current motor is about 1HP and I would want about the same power. Is there a particular variant of DC motor I would need to use? The board...

Tools you waited too long to acquire

I bet some of you here will laugh but one thing I wish I had got sooner is my Picquic screw drivers. I used to avoid multi bit screwdrivers like the plague because all the ones I had ever used were cheap flimsy and awkward to use ... until I discovered Picquics that is. I find they help with the...

Rant about no name vs name Brand stuff

Yeah its a can of worms that I think has been discussed here before. There are clones that have no name and there are clones where even the name and trademarks are copied. A variant of the question is clones that are designed to look like the real thing and sometimes are very difficult to tell...

    Am I a hoarder?

My brother and I were trying to build our own rocket engines using gunpowder mixes and sometimes sugar with saltpetre. They usually just blew up!
